How do I make the perfect coffee?
Posted by scottparat on 20 Jun 2009 | Tagged as: Coffee Questions
I have a standard 12 cup slow drip coffee maker, and Walmart brand french roast coffee. I don't like a very strong coffee taste, so how many scoops (tablespoons) of coffee should I put in?

I am an avid coffee drinker that prefers a less harsh flavor. For French Roast use a shade under an 1/8 of a cup. For cofee like Folgers Classic I use level 1/8 of a cup and when a bit daring i tend to heap it …
The longer coffee stands on a burner also tends to make it bitter or burnt flavor. For this I use a Thermal Carafe that retains heat well..
Less electricity and better coffee.

If you are making 12 cups of coffe, I suggest you start with 4 scoops. Then vary it depending on your taste.
French roast coffee is going to have a stronger coffe taste. You may want to go with a milder brand of coffee.

Make sure your pot is very clean, use unbleached filters, ice cold water, and use about 4 tablespoons of coffee.

Try one table spoon per cup. some half and half and over ice with preferred amounts of sugar is always great.

French Roast is probably not the best option for a moderate flavored coffee.
But anyway, I work at a Speedway and our formula is 3.5 oz, or just under 1/4 cup per pot. I think that would be a good starting point for you, and you can adjust your amount from there.

I like my coffee light with good flavor but no bitter taste. Wal mart french blend leans to the bitter side. Better to get regular coffee from folgers. I use two TEASPOONS, rounded, not heaping for a coffee maker your size. Some people weird out when I say that, thinking it won't have good flavor, but They change their tune once they taste it. The other secret, is to keep that coffee maker clean. About once a month, I run white vinegar thru the machine, just like you were making coffee, but use the vinegar (white) instead of water, and of course no coffee or filter. Then follow that with two runs of just water thru it, full cycle both times, and your coffee won't taste bitter or oily.

Perfect is in the tongue of the sipper. I ll give you my recipe for puertorican coffee , which for me is perfect. Put in three tablespoons per cup . Then in a pot start boiling one and a half evaporated milk reconstituted half and half and sugar to taste . Just when it starts to boil pour the coffe in the milk and smell… ahhhhhhhh You can add more milk if you feel you would like it lighter. You can also add some cinamon sticks in the boiling milk if youd like a variation.

I love Starbucks coffee and I get mad that I can't replicate the flavor at home (even with freshly ground Starbucks beans). They told me that its temperature. You need to brew the coffee at a very very hot 200+ degrees (less that 212 or it will boil)
Try to make it brew hotter I guess.
