How do you make coffee without a coffee maker?

Posted by scottparat on 23 May 2009 | Tagged as: Coffee Questions

I have never made coffee before and I had bought the grounds and cream and milk and filters…only to realize that my coffee maker is missing the little thing that holds the filters in place…

Is there an easy way to make coffee (to end up as iced coffee) without a maker?

I have a way hardly anyone seems to have ever heard of that's actually best for iced coffee, but makes a great hot coffee too. It's called cold brewed coffee.

There's a device sold called a Toddy Cold Brew system, but I do it with nothing but bowls and a strainer. All you do is combine 1/2 pound medium grind coffee with 5-6 cups cold water, let it sit overnight, pour it through a strainer into a bowl to get the majority of the grounds, and finally pour through a medium strainer with a paper coffee filter to get the fine residue.

It makes about 3.5 cups of a cold coffee concentrate. You add as much as you like for strength and dilute with water. It's delicious and smooth (almost no acid), stores for around a week in the fridge and can actually make great "instant" coffee.

I bring some to work so I just have to add hot water. I've used it for coffee based drinks after dinner (great with Kahlua & Bailey's). It's even been made into homemade coffee ice cream.

No one ever picks this method, but I think it's worth knowing about.

yep if you have a strainer, you can put the filter in the strainer and just pour hot water over the grounds and there you go.

I used to use coffee grounds to make coffee in much the same way the you make tea. Boil some water and put the grounds in the paper towel. Dunk that in the water and you have coffee!

I guess instant coffee could become iced coffee. Buy some instant coffee, which is basically puring hot water over grounds and getting coffee. Then I guess just put ice in your cup, and ta-dah! Iced coffee.

You need a strainer, which holds the filter and the ground over the cup while you pour hot water or a French Press which uses hot water, coffee grounds and a screen press. I use both of these methods everyday since I hate cleaning a coffee maker.

you could boil some water…put the coffee in the filter and then run the boiling water through it using a funnel or something…or if you have a large strainer, you can put your filter in it with the coffee grounds, set it down in a pot or bowl and pour the boiling water over it…careful not to burn yourself with the pot or the steam…i've done all of these when camping and they worked great.

you can pour it through a strainer as you pour yourself a cup or just let it settle to the bottom. It will.

Go to Wawa, 7-11, or any other convenience store in your area. They have those machines where you just push a button. What could be easier than that?

Just get a cup first. If there's no iced coffee in the store, put 2-3 ice cubes in the coffee.

    Voila!

When my french press broke, I made cowboy coffee. There are different recipes floating around the Internet, but what I did was boil water in a pot, throw the coffee in, turn the heat off, and wait until the grounds sank to the bottom. Then I poured it off into my cup and drank it. Just as good as what the french press makes (it's the same process, just without a filter).

I've seen replacement carafes (the pot at the bottom), but I don't often see replacement baskets (which I'm guessing is the part that holds the filter in place). Call housewares stores?

well we dont have a cofffe mixer . never have never will.

we just warm up some milk and add the coffee gratinfgs and sugar. mix it and there you go.

well if you want black coffee then boil some water instead of milk
