Whenever we make a pot of coffee at home it always tastes very bitter and not nearly as good as coffee at say Denny’s or even McDonalds. We’ve tried all the major brands of ground coffee and several different drip coffee makers…Please help!

I order a coffee at Starbucks with 1/2 hot water since I think their coffee is too strong. When I tell them, "I want a coffee with 1/2 hot water" they always look confused. How should I order this in the future?
